About Brood Awakening

This immersive art walk style installation on the park trails blends art, environmental education, and food to highlight the rich history and importance of the Walnut Creek Wetland Park. This exhibition is a celebration of the efforts taken by community stakeholders to restore and protect Raleigh’s watershed, a vital entity to the residents of Southeast Raleigh. As we celebrate unique ecosystems through interactive art featuring native species and their habitats, we also honor the legacy of environmental stewardship in Southeast Raleigh.

Once heavily polluted and used as a dumping ground by the city and private companies, the wetlands were transformed through the determined efforts of local residents, particularly the communities of Biltmore Hills and Rochester Heights. In the 1990s, parishioners of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church led cleanup efforts, which grew into the creation of Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ), a grassroots organization focused on restoring the wetlands. Their work culminated in the establishment of the Norman and Betty Camp Education Center in 2009. Today, the park serves as a vital watershed for Raleigh, mitigating flooding and pollution, while continuing to educate and inspire the community about the importance of green infrastructure and environmental justice.
